Government unveils Ghana’s national AI strategy

The Ministry of Communication has launched the Ghana national AI strategy on the 24th of April 2026.

The event, which came off at Labadi Beach Hotel, forms part of government initiatives to place Ghana on the global scale.

Speaking at the event, President John Dramani Mahama says the national artificial intelligence launch is an important initiative to boost AI in the country.

” This is a significant milestone in our national journey towards a digitally empowered, innovation-driven, and globally competitive Ghana.”

“It is also a statement of intent that Ghana will not just be a passive consumer of technologies shaping the future but that we are going to be an active participant in designing, governing, and developing them for our national transformation.” He added.

According to the president, there’s a target of making Ghana the leading supplier of artificial intelligence.

“Our vision is therefore clear to position Ghana as a leading artificial intelligence hub in West Africa and the wider continental region, driving innovation, creating jobs, strengthening institutions, and delivering inclusive national development.”

The minister responsible for communication, digital technology, and innovations, Honorable Samuel Nartey George, said Ghanaians must use AI tactically.

“Ghana must guide how this technology is used; we must guide it with responsibility, with ethics, and with purpose.”

According to the minister, this strategy implementation needs legal backing.

“Having implemented this strategy, the government recognizes that a strong legal and institution frame work must support our policy.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Jerry John Kponyo of the Responsible AI Lab( Rail) of KNUST said AI is not just an electronic device but an appliance for public development.

“Artificial intelligence is not just a new tool; it is a key to accelerating our national, economic, and sustainable development objectives.”

“This strategy is our comprehensive road map for taking advantage of the transformative power of AI to improve our economy, make our government services better, and enhance the overall quality of life of the Ghanaian people.” He said.

Professor Jerry John Kponyo said that the results of the initiative were not carried out by a particular office but were a collaborative effort.

“This strategy is not a product of a single office; it is the result of the extensive research, stakeholders’ consultation, and a strong shared commitment to Ghana’s digital future.”

The event brought together government officials, stakeholders, and industry experts to enhance productivity through AI.
