Greater Accra Kusaas select Faisel Mahama Abugri as New Chief

The Greater Accra Kusaas Chieftaincy Selection Committee has officially named Mr. Faisel Mahama Abugri as the new Chief of the Kusaasi Community in the Greater Accra Region.
The announcement was made on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Local Government Council in Laterbiokoshie, following several months of consultations, cultural vetting, and adherence to established Kusaasi chieftaincy procedures. The selection was conducted in close collaboration with the Kusaug Traditional Council under the supreme authority of Zug-Raan Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.
Mr. Abugri becomes the fourth person to occupy the position of Greater Accra Kusaas Chief. His selection, according to the Committee, was made with the full support of elders and traditional leaders in Accra and reflects his strong leadership qualities, humility, and dedication to service.
Among the four aspirants, three were present on the day the announcement was made: Mr. Faisel Mahama Abugri, Labadi Kusaasi Chief Naba Alooko Awan, and Chantang Zongo Chief Naba Azomyan Awini. The Agape Joma Chief, Naba Mohammed Asongtaba, was absent.
Following the announcement, a brief but spirited gathering was held at the palace of the Greater Accra Kusaas Chief, where youth, women, and elders of the community assembled to welcome and honour the newly selected chief. In a show of loyalty and unity, they pledged their unwavering support and commitment to his leadership.
The gathering featured rich cultural performances including drumming, traditional dance, and the singing of Kusaal praise songs — all intended to celebrate the occasion and pay homage to the new chief. The atmosphere was one of joy, pride, and renewed hope for the future of the Kusaasi community in Accra.
In his first public address, Mr. Abugri expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Greater Accra Kusaas community, the Selection Committee, and the Kusaug Traditional Council for the confidence reposed in him. He called for peace, unity, and collective responsibility in strengthening their cultural identity and pushing forward the development of the community.
“This is a sacred responsibility I accept with humility,” he said. “Let us come together with one heart and one voice — to protect our heritage, to uplift our people, and to honour the legacy of those who came before us.”
The Selection Committee, chaired by Elder Elijah Asambo and Lawyer Maxwell Ziyerley Agbambilla as Secretary, also issued a public statement cautioning against false information being spread on social media. The Committee described claims suggesting that no official declaration had been made as false, divisive, and aimed at creating confusion within the community.

“We strongly advise the public to disregard these baseless reports. Any statement not coming directly from the Selection Committee is null and void,” the Committee emphasized in a press release dated July 15, 2025.
