Gunmen attack NAIMOS team in Dormaa central, one killed

Gunmen have confronted a NAIMOS task force team during a routine patrol in Dormaa Central in the Bono Region. The attack led to a gun battle that left one armed thug dead and a NAIMOS soldier injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at about 11:10 a.m., when the task force encountered a group of armed men riding motorbikes in a bushy area along the Subinkurom–Kyeremasu road.
According to a report from NAIMOS, the task force was conducting routine patrols when the armed men suddenly appeared in their path. The gunmen reportedly opened fire immediately upon spotting the patrol team.
“The armed thugs who suddenly bumped into the NAIMOS task force opened fire immediately they spotted the task force,” the report stated.
The initial gunfire from the armed men hit the task force’s lead vehicle, deflating its right rear tyre. NAIMOS personnel responded by returning fire in what was described as defensive action.
“In the ensuing exchange of fire, one NAIMOS soldier sustained a gun shot on his right thigh,” the statement said.
The report further indicated that one of the armed men was also hit during the exchange. He sustained gunshot wounds to his left thigh and upper abdomen. Following the shooting, the remaining armed men fled the scene on their motorbikes, abandoning their injured accomplice.
The task force immediately transported both the injured soldier and the wounded armed man to the St. Matthew Catholic Hospital at Ampenkuro for medical attention.
Unfortunately, the armed man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The injured NAIMOS soldier, however, is currently responding to treatment, according to the task force.
Following the incident, NAIMOS said it intensified patrols in the area throughout the night to prevent further criminal activity and restore security along the affected stretch.
“NAIMOS continued its robust patrols in the area overnight and sends a strong warning to any other thugs and galamseyers to desist from such criminal acts,” the statement noted.
The task force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and tackling illegal activities, particularly in forested and mining-prone areas within the region.
The Dormaa Central incident adds to ongoing security operations aimed at curbing armed criminal activity and illegal mining-related violence in parts of the Bono Region.
NAIMOS has assured the public that it remains resolute in carrying out its mandate and will continue patrols to deter armed groups operating in remote areas.
