NPP presidential aspirants sign peace pact

Five aspirants seeking to lead the New Patriotic Party have signed a peace pact, pledging to accept and respect the outcome of the party’s January 31 presidential primaries.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, with all five contenders in attendance.
The aspirants are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; businessman and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong; Abetifi MP, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP, Dr. Yaw Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sat at the high table and observed proceedings, while former President John Agyekum Kufuor was unable to attend the event.
The peace pact commits the aspirants to conduct their campaigns in a civil manner and to accept the verdict of delegates when the primaries are held nationwide on January 31, 2026, regardless of the outcome.
A tense moment briefly disrupted the ceremony when Kennedy Agyapong declined to immediately append his signature to the agreement, drawing murmurs from the audience and visible discomfort among party leaders present.
Several party bigwigs were seen engaging him quietly as the atmosphere in the hall thickened.
After a short delay, Mr. Agyapong eventually signed the document, prompting relief among party officials and applause from sections of the gathering.
Speaking at the event, Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, urged NPP delegates to conduct themselves responsibly during the primaries.
The IGP added that political tolerance and discipline were essential to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic credentials, particularly during internal party elections.
Party officials present said the peace pact was aimed at preventing post-primary rancour and ensuring the party remains united ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The NPP presidential primaries are scheduled to take place on January 31, 2026, across all designated voting centres nationwide.
