Shooting: I hope you learnt from Secret Service evacuation of Trump – Mahama to Security Services

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghana’s security services to learn from the swift evacuation of U.S. leaders during a weekend shooting incident.
He referenced dramatic scenes from the United States where security personnel moved quickly to protect top officials during the White House Correspondents Dinner attended by the president and vice president on Saturday evening.
“This morning I was watching TV, and there were some gunshots at the White House press corps dinner,” Mahama said during the Thanksgiving Service for Julius Debrah, who has turned 60. “You should have seen the Secret Service bundling the President and Vice President out.”
He added that the incident should serve as a practical lesson for local security agencies, especially during events involving high-ranking government officials. “I’m sure our security has taken precaution because two of us are here,” he noted, referring to the presence of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman.
The comments follow a shooting scare on Saturday, April 25, 2026, during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton hotel. President Donald Trump and the First Lady were swiftly evacuated after reports of gunfire disrupted the event.
Authorities in Washington, D.C., confirmed that one suspect is in custody and is expected to face two charges in court. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may have been targeting administration officials.
Police reports say the suspect charged at a Secret Service checkpoint inside the hotel lobby while armed with multiple weapons. He reportedly exchanged gunfire with law enforcement officers before being subdued.
Officials believe the suspect acted alone. He was not shot but was taken to a hospital for treatment. A Secret Service agent who was struck in a bulletproof vest has since been treated and discharged.
