Today.com.gh Poll: John Boadu leads tight race for NPP National Chairman

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary John Boadu is the early frontrunner in a new Today.com.gh poll on the party’s next national chairman.

The online poll, which was conducted over four weeks and shared through Today.com.gh’s WhatsApp Channel and several WhatsApp groups, places Mr. Boadu in first position with 38.7% of the votes cast. Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, follows closely with 32.3%, while former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko is third with 29.0%.

The results suggest a highly competitive contest among the three personalities, with only a narrow gap separating the leading contenders.

John Boadu, who served as the NPP’s substantive General Secretary from 2018 to 2022, is widely regarded as one of the party’s most experienced national executives.

He is the only officer in the party’s history to have served in executive positions at every level of the NPP structure, beginning from the polling station through the constituency and regional levels to the national executive.

In addition to serving as General Secretary, Mr. Boadu has held several other national positions, including Acting General Secretary, National Organizer, Deputy National Communications Director, National Youth Organizer, National Youth Treasurer and National Finance Officer.

Boakye Agyarko, who secured 29.0% in the poll, previously served as Minister for Energy under the Akufo-Addo administration. He also managed the NPP’s 2012 presidential campaign and later served as chief policy advisor to the party’s presidential candidate during the 2016 election.

Chairman Wontumi, who received 32.3% support, has been the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman since 2014 and remains one of the party’s most influential figures.

However, his political future remains uncertain after an Accra High Court convicted him on July 20, 2026, on 16 counts related to facilitating illegal mining activities at his company’s concession in Samreboi. He is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence with hard labour.

Former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko was not included in the survey because he had not publicly expressed a firm intention to contest the party’s national chairmanship when the poll was designed and launched.

Although the poll is not scientifically representative of the wider NPP membership, it offers an early indication of public sentiment on potential contenders for one of the party’s most influential leadership positions.
