Tension in Awutu Senya East NDC: Secretary calls for calm amid chairman’s suspension

The Awutu Senya East NDC Constituency Secretary, Michael Kese Oteng-Pabi, has appealed for calm following rising tensions triggered by the suspension of the constituency chairman and related internal disputes.

He urged party members to avoid actions that could worsen the situation after the arrest of the constituency’s Zongo Ward Organizer, Awudu Gewah, over his alleged role in locking the party’s constituency office during recent internal protests.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Mr. Oteng-Pabi described the situation as delicate and warned that any further provocation could escalate tensions within the constituency.

“Let’s all remain calm. The situation is very volatile. Anything small can spark something,” he said.

He expressed disappointment over the decision to invite a party member to the police station, insisting that internal disagreements should first be handled through the party’s own structures.

“We are all one party. If someone has said something that is not palatable or in good taste with somebody, you inform us, we call the person and we discuss. Do we have to come to the police station and do what we are doing?” he asked.

Mr. Oteng-Pabi further appealed to all factions and stakeholders to exercise restraint to prevent the dispute from deteriorating.

“We are also saying that all other parties involved, all other interests involved, everybody should calm down. Nobody should do things that will escalate the situation,” he stated.

His comments come days after the National Democratic Congress suspended Awutu Senya East Constituency Chairman Stephen Ofosu Agyare for five months following a petition submitted by the area’s Member of Parliament, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

In a letter dated July 22, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC said its Functional Executive Committee acted after considering the petition alongside recommendations from the Central Regional Council of Elders.

The party invoked Articles 48(4) and 48(6) of its constitution, suspended Mr. Ofosu Agyare with immediate effect, and referred the matter to the National Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.

During the suspension period, he has been directed not to perform any duties or exercise the authority of constituency chairman until the disciplinary process is concluded.
