Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Accra West Region will temporarily shut down the Weija Treatment Plant on Thursday, December 4, 2025, for critical work on a damaged transmission line.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the company said a major pipeline conveying treated water to western parts of Accra had developed severe perforations and risked failing entirely without immediate intervention. The planned shutdown will run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
GWL noted that the repair exercise will disrupt supply to several high-density communities, including Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, Gbawe, parts of Weija, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Odorkor, Kaneshie, Tesano, Darkuman, Sowutuom, Lapaz, sections of Achimota, the North Industrial Area and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The utility said production will resume as soon as the work is completed and urged residents and businesses to make contingency plans. GWL encouraged all affected areas to store enough water ahead of the interruption.
“We regret the inconvenience that may arise as a result of the shutdown,” the statement said.
The GWL usually shuts down the Weija Plant to undertake enhancements on the facility.
Last month, Management of Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL), Accra West Region, announced an emergency shutdown of the Weija Treatment Plant to allow for urgent repair works.
A statement issued by the GWL noted that the shutdown will take place on Tuesday, 18th November 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., during which water supply to several parts of Accra will be temporarily interrupted.
Areas affected were Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, parts of Weija, Gbawe, Mallam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Darkuman, and Kaneshie.
The others were Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, Achimota, North Industrial Area, and the surrounding communities.
