Haruna Iddrisu cuts sod for 650-capacity dormitory at Mawuli SHS
Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has cut the sod for the construction of a 650-bed dormitory for both boys and girls of Mawuli Senior High School in Ho.
The project, according to him, forms part of the government’s renewed efforts to address infrastructure challenges in senior high schools and enhance the overall quality of education delivery across the country.
The event, which took place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, also marked the 75th Anniversary celebration of Mawuli SHS Anniversary. Speaking at the event, Mr. Iddrisu described the occasion as both historic and personal, marking his first official visit to celebrate the school’s achievements since assuming office as Education Minister.
“And then for you ladies and gentlemen of the media, since my assumption of office as Minister for Education, this is my first time to celebrate Mawuli Senior High School,” Hon. Iddrisu said.
He announced that the government has earmarked GH¢300 million in the 2026 national budget to upgrade a number of second-cycle institutions across the country. The initiative, he said, is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which aims to bridge educational disparities by improving facilities and academic environments.
Under the plan, some Category B schools will be upgraded to Category A, while Category C schools will receive targeted support to enhance their capacity. Mr. Iddrisu said existing top-tier institutions such as Mawuli SHS will also benefit from expanded infrastructure and quality interventions.
“Under President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, we may double the capacity of schools like Mawuli SHS and improve their standing as Category A institutions,” he stated.
The Minister further disclosed that about $180 million, supported by the World Bank, has been allocated for the broader school improvement programme, emphasizing that strengthening senior high schools is vital to sustaining the Free SHS policy.
“Undoubtedly, they remain the source of quality Free SHS,” he added.
The Headmaster of Mawuli SHS, Mr Benjamin Yaw Dei, commended the government for maintaining its commitment to education reforms and praised the Minister’s “bold and visionary leadership” in introducing measures to improve the single-track system.
He noted that the school’s population, which currently stands at 1,161, has put pressure on existing facilities and expressed appreciation to the Minister for initiating the new dormitory project. He also appealed for the completion of stalled infrastructure and the provision of more GETFund classrooms to ease congestion.
Additionally, Mr. Dei highlighted the financial strain resulting from the shift from prepaid to postpaid electricity meters, urging government support to mitigate the challenge.
