Ivory Coast clinches first African win at 2026 World Cup

Ivory Coast secured Africa’s first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Ecuador 1-0 in a dramatic Group E encounter.

The Elephants left it late to claim all three points on Sunday, June 14, with substitute Amad Diallo scoring the winner in the 90th minute to hand his side a memorable opening victory.

The match was played at a frantic pace from the outset, with both teams creating numerous chances in an end-to-end contest. Ecuador came closest during the first half, striking the crossbar twice through John Yeboah and Alan Minda.

The South Americans continued their attacking threat after the break when captain Enner Valencia rattled the post early in the second half, leaving Ivory Coast relieved to escape without conceding.

Ivory Coast also had opportunities of their own, with Elye Wahi seeing his effort crash against the crossbar as the African champions searched for a breakthrough.

With the match seemingly heading for a goalless draw, defender Wilfried Singo produced a decisive moment in the final minute of normal time. The defender surged down the right flank before delivering a low cross to the edge of the penalty area.

Amad Diallo, who had come off the bench earlier in the game, met the pass with composure and guided a left-footed effort beyond Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez to seal victory.

Teenage sensation Yan Diomande was one of Ivory Coast’s standout performers throughout the contest. The winger repeatedly troubled Ecuador’s defence with his pace and creativity, creating several opportunities and maintaining constant pressure on the opposition.

The victory carried added significance for Ivory Coast, marking their first World Cup triumph in exactly 12 years since defeating Japan during the 2014 tournament. It was also the first time the West African nation had beaten a higher-ranked FIFA opponent at a World Cup.

For Ecuador, the defeat ended an impressive 19-match unbeaten run that stretched back to September 2024.

The result leaves Ivory Coast with three points and second place in Group E, behind Germany, who earlier thrashed Curaçao 7-1. Both Ivory Coast and Ecuador will return to action on June 20 as the battle for qualification to the knockout stage intensifies.
