Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Is capable of leading Ghana – Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has described Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as capable of leading Ghana, should she be given the opportunity in the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Iddrisu made the remarks during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Wednesday, December 24, where he shared his views on leadership within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the country’s broader governance challenges.

“She’s the Vice President of the Republic, and arguably, given her standing, she’s very capable of leading the country. I have worked very closely with her, and 2028 is still far away,” he said.

According to the Education Minister, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s experience and calm leadership style position her as someone who could provide direction while maintaining internal cohesion within the party.

“We’re talking about three years, but Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang comes to me as someone who can hold the unity of the NDC as a political party and provide leadership,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.

During the same interview, Mr. Iddrisu also raised concerns about Ghana’s rising youth unemployment, warning that the situation poses significant risks to social stability and economic growth.

“Unemployment remains a ticking time bomb. We need to find urgent answers and solutions to address the growing youth unemployment,” he said.

He noted that while more young people are acquiring education and vocational skills, job creation has not expanded at a comparable rate, leaving many qualified graduates without employment.

The Minister called for a coordinated national response involving government, the private sector, and educational institutions to better align training programmes with labour market needs. He cautioned that failing to address the mismatch between education and employment could deepen graduate unemployment and worsen existing social challenges.

Mr. Iddrisu stressed that tackling youth unemployment must remain a national priority, urging sustained policy reforms and targeted investment in sectors capable of absorbing large numbers of young people and providing sustainable livelihoods.
