Kennedy Agyapong picks number one in NPP flagbearer ballot

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has conducted its official balloting exercise to determine the positions of aspirants contesting in the party’s upcoming presidential primary, slated for January 31, 2026.
The event, which took place at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Friday, October 10, 2025, was supervised by the Presidential Elections Committee in collaboration with officials from the Electoral Commission of Ghana. Representatives of all five aspirants, party executives, and election officers were present to ensure a transparent and credible process.
At the close of the exercise, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the outspoken former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, picked the number one spot, securing the top position on the ballot paper. His team expressed excitement over the outcome, describing it as symbolic of his readiness to lead the party into the next general elections.
Dr Bryan Acheampong, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, drew the second position, while former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, widely viewed as one of the leading contenders, picked the third slot. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who served as Minister for Education, took the fourth position, with former NPP General Secretary, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, completing the list in the fifth position.
In a statement released after the balloting, the Presidential Elections Committee, led by its Secretary William Yamoah, commended all aspirants and their representatives for conducting themselves with maturity and respect for the party’s internal democratic procedures. The Committee emphasized that the party remains committed to fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness in the upcoming presidential primary.
The NPP also reiterated that the entire process will be governed by the party’s electoral guidelines adopted on July 29, 2025, and assured delegates that all necessary logistics are being put in place to ensure a smooth and credible election.
The January 2026 primary is expected to be one of the most competitive in the party’s recent history, as the governing NPP prepares to elect a new leader to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Party members and political observers say the outcome of the internal election will play a key role in shaping the NPP’s strategy and prospects ahead of the 2028 general elections.
