‎Kennedy ‘least risky’ option in NPP flagbearer race – Nyantakyi

‎A leading voice in the Agyapong campaign, former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi, has described the outspoken politician as the party’s safest bet, arguing that his appeal extends beyond the NPP’s traditional support base.

‎Speaking on the AM Show on Multi TV, he said the majority of his candidate’s had worked in the Akufo-Addo government and could be blamed for the things that went wrong during the period.

‎According to Mr Nyantakyi, Mr Agyapong’s relative distance from the core leadership of the last NPP government gives him an advantage, especially after the party’s defeat in the December 2024 elections.

‎“Apart from him and Kwabena Agyapong, the other three were active members of the government of the NPP, leading to the defeat. So, you can conveniently rope them in and blame them for the poor performance of the party in the December 2024 election,” he stated.

‎“Kennedy Agyapong is one particular politician in Ghana whose popularity knows no bounds,” Mr Nyantakyi said.
‎
‎“There are people in other political parties, such as the NDC, CPP and others who admire and support him and are even asking the NPP to present him as its candidate so they can vote for him.”
‎
‎He further argued that Mr Agyapong’s reputation for confronting corruption and his straightforward style of communication resonate with voters who are frustrated with conventional politics.
‎
‎“The link between him and the inadequacies of the previous regime is minimal. He comes off as somebody with a clean slate, a person of his own with policies you can relate to,” Mr Nyantakyi added.

‎As the New Patriotic Party prepares to elect its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is being promoted by key figures within the party as the most electable choice ahead of the 2028 polls.
‎
‎Mr Agyapong is contesting the slot alongside former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Abetifi MP Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.
‎
‎Beyond partisan considerations, he said the former MP enjoys support among young voters, traders, religious communities and floating voters, aided by his philanthropic activities and public image as an empathetic leader.
‎
‎Job creation and economic hardship feature prominently in Mr Agyapong’s campaign, a focus his team says reflects public concerns.
‎
‎“Ghana is currently grappling with unemployment, and Kennedy Agyapong remains the only NPP flagbearer aspirant whose campaign message is anchored on addressing this challenge,” he observed.
‎
‎He also described Mr Agyapong as “fearless, courageous, and unconventional,” arguing that these traits have helped him connect with voters in markets, churches and other public spaces as the party heads into its crucial January 31 contest.
