NPP flagbearership contest should only be about ideas, vision – Bawumia

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) moves closer to electing its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, former Vice President and flagbearer hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party members to prioritise unity, ideas, and policy rather than personal rivalries or negative campaigning.
In a New Year message to NPP supporters, Dr Bawumia stressed that the party’s main objective must be to secure victory in 2028. He warned that internal tensions, rumours, or perceived divisions could weaken the party and provide an advantage to political opponents if not managed carefully.
“To every NPP member listening to me, let us keep our eyes fixed on the prize. We must win 2028 for the sake of Ghana,” he said.
Dr Bawumia acknowledged that leadership contests naturally generate debate, but he urged members to keep the broader national interest above individual ambitions. He emphasised that the flagbearership race should focus on ideas, vision, and policy direction, rather than personal attacks or internal friction.
“We should not be distracted by the storms around us, the rumours, and the perceived divisions. Let us set aside anything that has the potential to divide our party further,” Dr Bawumia added, highlighting the importance of discipline and cohesion within the party.
Reinforcing his central message, he said: “This flagbearership contest should only be about ideas and vision, and not personal attacks on any of us. We only provide ammunition to our opponents if we engage in such anti-party acts.” He stressed that an issue-focused and respectful contest would strengthen internal unity and enhance the party’s credibility with voters ahead of 2028.
Dr Bawumia also noted that internal discipline, calm, and adherence to democratic processes are essential for maintaining the NPP’s reputation and ensuring a smooth transition into the election campaign. He encouraged members to engage constructively, present clear policy alternatives, and participate in debates that reflect the party’s vision for Ghana.
The NPP is expected to elect its flagbearer on January 31, a process that follows recent constitutional reforms aimed at broadening participation and improving internal democracy. According to Dr Bawumia, this is a key opportunity for the party to demonstrate its maturity and commitment to transparent, issue-based leadership selection.
