‎SYPALA: Kofi Bentil calls for stronger checks on government

‎Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has called for stronger checks on government power, warning that the absence of consequences for wrongdoing creates a culture of lawlessness and abuse.
‎
‎Speaking at Sypala 2026, on Tuesday August 25, which is organised by the IMANI Center for Policy and Education, Bentil said effective governance depends on accountability, limited government power and respect for citizens.

The 12th Edition of the Students & Young Professionals African Liberty Academy (SYPALA) is currently happening from August 24 to 27, 2026, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

‎”When you see somebody messing around, it’s because they don’t think there’ll be a consequence for it,” he said.
‎
‎He contrasted Ghana’s governance system with the enforcement of laws in the United States, where, he noted, citizens face immediate consequences for violating regulations.
‎
‎According to him, the certainty of punishment encourages people to obey the law, while weak enforcement in Africa often allows people to escape accountability through personal connections.
‎
‎”They won’t do that in Africa because there are no consequences. You’ll call his uncle, his uncle will speak to someone,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.
‎
‎Bentil also warned that excessive government power, without adequate checks, could lead to abuse of citizens.
‎
‎”That’s the lawlessness that comes when you give government power and you don’t check it,” he said.
‎
‎He stressed that legitimate political authority must remain accountable to citizens.
‎
‎”Every legitimate power comes from the people. Every legitimate government responds to the people, and does not abuse them,” he said.
‎
‎Bentil therefore urged Ghanaians to continue advocating for limited government and stronger institutional checks.
‎
‎”We fight to limit the powers of our government. It is not an easy fight, but we do it,” he added.
