SYPALA: Technology alone is not enough for long-term business success – Philip Tieku

Chief Executive Officer of Star Oil, Philip Tieku, has underscored the importance of continuous innovation and operational efficiency, saying technology by itself cannot guarantee long-term business success.
Speaking at the Students and Young Professionals African Liberty Academy (SYPALA) 2026, Tieku addressed concerns about how companies can sustain a competitive advantage when rivals eventually gain access to the same technologies.
The 12th Edition of the Students & Young Professionals African Liberty Academy (SYPALA) is currently happening from August 24 to 27, 2026, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
Mr. Tieku explained that the company’s strategy goes beyond technology, focusing on innovation, efficiency, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing market conditions.
“We have a continuous focus on innovation and operational efficiency, so as the market evolves, our ability to innovate faster and maintain economies of scale remains our true long-term advantage,” Tieku added.
According to him, Star Oil’s technological investments have given the company a strong position in the market, but maintaining that lead requires constant improvement and adaptation.
“We’ve been at this since 2018, almost eight years into this journey, and we haven’t seen any real response as far as the technology platform is concerned,” he said.
Tieku acknowledged that competitors are likely to adopt similar technologies over time, noting that such developments are a normal part of business competition.
“We know competitors will eventually catch up with us in terms of what we’re doing, but that is the nature of competition,” he stated.
He added that businesses seeking sustained growth must invest in systems and processes that allow them to respond quickly to industry changes while improving productivity and customer value.
