NPP chairmanship is responsibility, not title – Paul Afako

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has sought to distinguish his bid for the party’s national chairmanship from a quest for political recognition, saying his decision is based on a willingness to serve and an understanding of the demands of the office.

Mr Afoko said his previous experience as national chairman had given him first hand knowledge of both the prestige and challenges associated with the position.

“I am not seeking the Chairmanship because I need a title. I have occupied this office before.
I know its honour. I know its burdens,” he said.

His comments come as the NPP’s national chairmanship race gains attention, with aspirants positioning themselves to win the confidence of party delegates ahead of the party’s internal elections.

For Mr Afoko, his previous tenure is a key part of the case he is presenting to the party. Rather than portraying the chairmanship simply as a senior political position, he is emphasising the responsibility that comes with managing the affairs of one of Ghana’s major political parties.

The former chairman’s decision to return to the race also brings his previous experience back into focus, particularly at a time when questions about party organisation, unity and effective leadership remain important considerations for political parties preparing for future elections.

Mr Afoko is therefore seeking to present himself as an experienced hand who understands the realities of the position and is prepared to shoulder its responsibilities.

His message suggests that the central issue for his campaign is not the status attached to the chairmanship but what the next occupant can contribute to the party and how effectively the person can discharge the responsibilities of the office.
