Labone SHS fire: I’ll construct new girls’ dormitory if my budget allows – Haruna

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has assured students and management of Labone Senior High School that the government will provide temporary housing for female students affected by the recent fire outbreak that destroyed three girls’ dormitories. The Minister visited the school on Monday, March 17, 2025, to assess the damage and pledged to provide temporary facilities to ensure the students’ education is not disrupted. He also promised to construct a new dormitory if his budget allows.
According to Haruna Iddrisu, the government will conduct an assessment to determine the extent of the damage and begin work on repairing the affected dormitories. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the students’ safety and well-being, stating, “I have asked a team to come over now and do an assessment. We will get them located (to a temporary facility), and work should commence.”
The fire outbreak, which occurred on Sunday, March 17, 2025, destroyed one dormitory completely and partially damaged two others. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The Minister’s prompt response and commitment to addressing the situation have been welcomed by students, parents, and school administrators.
In addition to providing temporary housing and repairing the damaged dormitories, the Education Minister announced plans to establish an emergency fund to support schools affected by natural disasters and other unforeseen events. This proactive approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating a resilient and supportive education system.
