Let’s uphold ideals of June 4 for a prosperous Ghana – Ing. Abeiku Hayford

Deputy General Secretary hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ing. Abeiku Hayford, has called on Ghanaians to uphold the ideals of June 4, saying they remain crucial to promoting accountability, social justice and national development.
The General Secretary of the NDC Former Parliamentary Aspirants Association made the call in a message marking this year’s June 4 commemoration.
“Today, we commemorate June 4 and celebrate the enduring values of Probity, Accountability and Social Justice. Principles that continue to inspire integrity in leadership, responsibility in governance, and fairness for all. Let us uphold these ideals and work together to build a more just, accountable, and prosperous Ghana,” he stated.
Ing. Hayford noted that the principles underpinning the June 4 uprising remain relevant in addressing contemporary governance challenges and strengthening public confidence in state institutions.
His remarks come as the National Democratic Congress observes June 2026 as “NDC Month,” following the launch of a series of nationwide activities aimed at promoting reflection, political education and renewed commitment to the party’s founding ideals.
The month-long observance is being held under the theme, “Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising.” According to the party, the theme seeks to draw lessons from Ghana’s political history while advancing ongoing efforts to improve accountability, transparency and institutional performance.
The June 4 uprising remains one of the most significant events in Ghana’s political history. Led by the late former President and founder of the NDC, Jerry John Rawlings, the uprising emerged from widespread public dissatisfaction with corruption, indiscipline and abuse of power. The event has since become a symbol of the struggle for probity, accountability and social justice.
For the NDC, June 4 is not only a day of remembrance but also an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made in the pursuit of good governance and national development. The party has consistently maintained that the values associated with the uprising remain relevant to Ghana’s democratic growth and institutional development.
As part of NDC Month 2026, the party is expected to undertake a range of activities across the country, including public lectures, community outreach programmes, political education campaigns and engagements with young people on the importance of leadership, patriotism and responsible citizenship.
Ing. Hayford stressed that building a prosperous Ghana requires collective commitment from both leaders and citizens, urging all stakeholders to embrace integrity, accountability and fairness in their respective roles.
He said the commemoration should serve as a reminder that the nation’s progress depends on strong institutions, ethical leadership and an unwavering commitment to the public good.
He further called on party members and supporters to use the occasion to recommit themselves to the ideals that have guided the NDC since its formation, emphasizing that the pursuit of social justice and accountable governance remains central to the party’s vision for Ghana.
“As we commemorate June 4, we must not only remember the past but also draw inspiration from it. The values of probity, accountability and social justice should continue to guide our actions as we work together towards a stronger, fairer and more prosperous Ghana,” he added.
