Madam Ambassador!: Former movie star Kalsoume Sinare to represent Ghana in Spain

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare Baffoe as Ghana’s Ambassador-designate to the Kingdom of Spain.
The ceremony took place at Jubilee House, where she took the oath of office, allegiance, and secrecy, formally beginning her diplomatic assignment.
By taking the oath, Madam Sinare Baffoe is mandated to promote Ghana’s foreign policy priorities while working to deepen bilateral relations between Ghana and Spain.
Her appointment represents a major shift from her decades-long career in the creative industry into international diplomacy. Known for her influence in Ghana’s film sector, the move reflects a broader pattern of appointing notable public figures to represent the country abroad.
She takes over from Regina Appiah-Sam, who previously served as Ghana’s ambassador to Spain. Appiah-Sam built a long diplomatic career within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, where she joined the foreign service in 2002 as a Foreign Service Officer and accumulated more than two decades of diplomatic experience.
Relations between Ghana and Spain date back to 1967 and have grown steadily through sustained diplomatic engagement and cooperation in several sectors.
Both countries have expanded partnerships in areas such as trade, investment and regional security. Collaboration has also developed in maritime security, renewable energy, agriculture and tourism.
These engagements have been supported by Spain’s Focus Africa 2023, a programme aimed at strengthening economic and strategic relations between Spain and African countries, including Ghana.
Spain’s diplomatic presence in Ghana increased in 2008 with the opening of its embassy and commercial office in Accra, a move that further boosted trade relations and institutional cooperation.
High-level political engagements have also played a role in strengthening ties. Meetings between Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have helped sustain momentum in bilateral discussions and cooperation.
As Ambassador-designate, Madam Sinare Baffoe is expected to build on these foundations by advancing Ghana’s diplomatic and economic interests while promoting cultural exchange between the two countries.
Before her appointment, Kalsoume Sinare built a distinguished career in the Ghanaian film industry as an actress, model and producer. She rose to national prominence in the 1990s through films such as Babina, Trinity and Sala.
Her contributions to the creative arts have earned her several nominations and awards, including recognition at the Golden Movie Awards Africa and the Ghana Movie Awards.
She began her professional journey in modelling after completing her education at Accra High School, later representing Ghana at the Miss Model of the World 1990 pageant.
Her transition into acting began on stage with Theatre Mirrors before making her film debut in Out of Sight in 1993. Over the years, she appeared in numerous productions, earning critical acclaim and establishing herself as one of Ghana’s respected figures in film.
