Mahama confers posthumous promotions on fallen Ghana Armed Forces Personnel

President John Dramani Mahama has posthumously promoted eight Ghana Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash, honouring their courage, professionalism, and service to the nation.
The announcement was made during a solemn interfaith state funeral held at Independence Square, which drew government officials, high-ranking military officers, foreign dignitaries, and grieving families. The ceremony offered Ghana an opportunity to pay tribute to the fallen heroes and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to their families.
Among those honoured were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. Squadron Leader Anala was elevated posthumously to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Twum-Ampadu promoted to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Mensah promoted to Flight Sergeant.
Addressing the mourners, President Mahama described the fallen servicemen as “true patriots who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty” and assured that their families would receive government support. He highlighted the exemplary service of the personnel and emphasised: “Their dedication, bravery, and sacrifice will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory.”
The tragic crash occurred during a routine mission, plunging the nation into mourning and prompting an outpouring of condolences from across Ghana. The Ghana Armed Forces have pledged to conclude investigations into the cause of the crash and to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The funeral featured full military honours, including ceremonial guards, flag draping, and moments of silence in tribute to the fallen soldiers. President Mahama’s remarks underscored not only the personal loss suffered by the families but also the national significance of the servicemen’s sacrifice, which he described as an enduring example of patriotism and duty.
As the nation bid farewell to its fallen heroes, the President stressed that their commitment and courage would continue to inspire future generations of Ghana Armed Forces personnel. “Their dedication, bravery, and sacrifice will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory,” he reiterated, marking the lasting legacy of the eight soldiers who gave their lives in service of the country.
