Mahama directs extension of Tema Port Railway to Dawa Industrial enclave

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Ministry of Transport to accelerate the expansion of the railway line connecting Tema Port to the Dawa Industrial Enclave in the Greater Accra Region.

The initiative aims to enhance cargo transport efficiency while preparations for the Mpakadan Inland Port on the Volta Lake continue.

The project is expected to streamline the movement of goods from Tema Port and also provide a reliable commuting option for workers traveling between Ashaiman and the Industrial Enclave. Once completed, it is anticipated to significantly reduce logistical delays and boost overall industrial productivity in the region.

Speaking at a meeting with Organized Labour, led by TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah, President Mahama addressed outstanding salary arrears affecting railway sector employees. He assured participants that the Ministry of Finance would be engaged promptly to secure the necessary allocations for clearing pending payments.

Following recommendations from the Transport Ministry, more than a hundred railway staff will be redeployed from the Western Region to Tema to support operations along the Tema-Mpakadan line. Retired employees will also receive their due compensation, ensuring fairness and adherence to labour regulations.

President Mahama further directed that dismantling of outdated railway tracks be carried out by railway personnel, with all recovered materials transported directly to factories for recycling. This approach is intended to promote operational efficiency while supporting sustainability and responsible resource management.

TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah expressed gratitude for the President’s proactive response and swift intervention on issues affecting organized labour.

The meeting was attended by key government officials including Presidential Adviser and Special Aide Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, and CEO of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, Dr Frederick Appoh.
