Mahama’s China visit yields Ashanti Region development pact

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, says the region has secured a landmark development partnership with China’s Henan Province, following President John Dramani Mahama’s successful State Visit to the People’s Republic of China.
The collaboration, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Zhengzhou, aims to enhance cooperation in agribusiness, smart city planning, transportation, tourism, and industrial infrastructure.
Dr. Amoakohene said the initiative reflects the President’s broader vision of expanding Ghana–China relations to stimulate regional development and innovation.
“Following the successful State Visit of H.E. John Dramani Mahama to the People’s Republic of China, I had the honour of leading a delegation of three Municipal Chief Executives—Hon. Anwel Sadat (Oforikrom), Hon. Eric Asibey (Kwadaso), and Hon. Jerryne Asante (Ejisu)—to Zhengzhou in the Henan Province of China,” Dr. Amoakohene said on X.
“Our mission focused on exploring partnership opportunities in agribusiness and agro-processing, smart city planning, smart transportation, tourism and cultural preservation, and industrial infrastructure development,” he added.
He explained that the delegation participated in the *Global Mayors Forum*, where city leaders from across the world gathered to exchange ideas on sustainable urban transformation.
“We joined mayors and city leaders from across the world at the Global Mayors Forum, where I proudly represented the Ashanti Region and successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of the Region,” the Minister said.
“This MoU establishes a framework for provincial and municipal-level cooperation and cross-city collaboration to promote sustainable development and shared prosperity.”
Dr. Amoakohene said the new partnership will open avenues for municipal departments in the Ashanti Region to collaborate internationally, exchange expertise, and adopt global best practices in governance and technology.
“I extend my profound gratitude to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama for his exceptional leadership and vision in deepening Ghana–China relations and creating new opportunities for regional development,” he added. “Together, we are building a modern, inclusive, and globally connected Ashanti Region.”
The cooperation is expected to strengthen local governance capacity, boost industrial growth, and enhance urban planning efforts across the Ashanti Region.
