Mahama hails late Asantehemaa as a pillar of strength and inspiration

President John Dramani Mahama has paid glowing tribute to the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, describing her as a symbol of endurance.

At the funeral rites in Kumasi on Thursday, September 18, the President’s tribute was delivered on his behalf by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.

He said the Queen Mother’s wisdom and guidance left a profound imprint on generations and strengthened the cultural fabric of the nation.

“She was, without a doubt, a majestic pillar of strength and inspiration not only to the Manhyia Palace and the Asanteman, but to the entire nation,” Dr Amoakohene declared.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III reigned for eight years as Asantehemaa, during which she worked tirelessly to preserve tradition, promote peace, and project dignity.

Her leadership, the President noted, carried particular significance for women in Asanteman and beyond.

“Throughout her 8-year reign, she embodied the true essence of Asante values, maintaining tradition with steadfast dedication and projecting an image of dignity and peace. Her wise counsel and astute guidance were invaluable.

“She was truly an inspiration and a worthy role model, particularly for the women of Asanteman and Ghana at large,” the tribute stated.

The late Queen Mother, sister of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is being honored with elaborate traditional rites in Kumasi.

The funeral has drawn chiefs, dignitaries, political leaders, and mourners from across the country to pay their respects to her enduring legacy.

Senior government officials and politicians are also due to be at Manhyia to commiserate with the Asantehene and the royal family.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at the age of 90, succeeded Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II in 2017.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III was the elder sister of Otumfuo Osei Tutu and daughter of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who passed away at age 109 on November 15, 2016, after reigning for 39 years as Asantehemaa.

The Asantehemaa occupied a revered position in Asante culture, serving as the mother of the Asantehene and custodian of key traditions.

Her funeral is expected to draw thousands of mourners,  traditional leaders, and dignitaries, making the ARCC’s measures crucial for maintaining order and preserving the solemnity of the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has announced a series of directives to guide government workers and institutions during the funeral and burial rites of the late Asantehemaa.

In a public statement signed by Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the ARCC emphasized that all essential government workers are to appear in official uniforms and carry valid identification cards.

A further directive called for strict adherence to movement restrictions, with the ARCC underscoring the need for cooperation with security agencies.
