Mahama set to deliver state of the nation address today

President John Dramani Mahama will today address Parliament with his State of the Nation Address (SONA), a constitutionally mandated update on the condition of the country and the policy direction of his administration for the year ahead.
The annual address is expected to provide both an assessment of Ghana’s current circumstances and a forward-looking agenda aimed at consolidating gains and confronting persistent challenges. The message comes at a time when economic stability, employment, and cost-of-living pressures remain central to public debate.
On the economy, the President is widely expected to outline government strategies to rein in inflationary pressures, improve domestic revenue generation, and manage public debt sustainably. Measures targeted at expanding opportunities for young people and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises are also anticipated to feature prominently, as the administration seeks to strengthen confidence in the broader macroeconomic recovery effort.
Beyond the economy, infrastructure development is likely to receive significant attention. The President is expected to provide updates on transportation networks, housing initiatives, and investments in water and sanitation systems, while outlining new interventions designed to accelerate growth across regions.
Education reforms are also anticipated to form a key pillar of the address. Areas likely to be highlighted include improving learning outcomes, strengthening technical and vocational training, expanding access to tertiary education, and enhancing teacher capacity through recruitment and professional development initiatives.
In the health sector, the President is expected to review progress in expanding medical infrastructure, equipping health facilities, and increasing the health workforce. Efforts to improve service delivery and ensure the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) are also likely to be addressed.
The address, which traditionally draws lawmakers, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional leaders, and civil society representatives, is expected to shape legislative priorities and national conversations in the months ahead. Observers say it will serve as a critical platform for the President to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth, social protection, and long-term national transformation.
