Minister assures investigation into Ibrahim Mahama’s reported assault

Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John Nburidiba has assured a full investigation into claims that contemporary artist Ibrahim Mahama was assaulted by police officers.

The assurance followed a visit to Mahama’s Red Clay Studio, where the Minister met with him alongside the Northern Regional Police Commander and the Regional Security Coordinator. The meeting focused on clarifying the circumstances of the reported incident.

The Minister described the development as concerning and confirmed that investigations have begun to establish the facts. “Investigations have been set in motion to establish the facts and ensure accountability where necessary,” he said.

The Northern Regional Police Commander said security agencies are handling the matter with urgency and professionalism. “The process will be conducted impartially and without bias,” he stated.

Ibrahim Mahama alleged that the incident took place during heavy traffic congestion in Tamale following Eid al-Fitr prayers. According to him, the confrontation occurred in a busy area where vehicle movement was temporarily disrupted.

Mahama said the individuals involved were part of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, known as the “Black Maria,” and that the situation escalated into a physical altercation. He reportedly sustained dental injuries, including the loss of a tooth and damage to others. He was treated at a hospital in Tamale and later discharged, but further medical care is expected.

The Minister’s visit indicates that the government is reviewing the incident. Authorities stated that the matter will be investigated fully, and any necessary action will be taken based on the findings.

The meeting aimed to clarify the reported events and outline steps for accountability. Officials said the investigation will follow standard procedures, and the outcome will be determined by the evidence collected.
