NDC campaigning for my opponents – Bawumia alleges

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has alleged that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is campaigning for some of his rivals in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Addressing party supporters during a campaign event in the Oti Region over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia said the NDC is deliberately backing some NPP aspirants because it fears his victory would make the 2028 general election difficult for them.
“You know, in the upcoming primaries, the NDC doesn’t want me to win,” he said. “Do you know they are campaigning for some of my opponents? Have you realised that?”
According to him, the opposition party’s preference for another NPP candidate shows it sees him as a greater electoral threat.
“They know if I win the election, I’m going to win the 2028 election,” Dr. Bawumia asserted. “They know that, so they don’t want me to win.”
He added that the NDC’s strategy is to influence the internal dynamics of the NPP to its own advantage.
“They prefer another candidate to make it easy for them, and we will not give that to them,” he declared.
Dr. Bawumia used a football analogy to illustrate his point, questioning why an opponent should determine a team’s lineup.
“When you’re going to play a football match with a team, and they want to select your goalkeeper for you, would you agree?” he asked, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The former vice president reiterated his confidence in winning both the primaries and the 2028 general election, saying the NPP’s record under his leadership would deliver another victory.
The January 2026 presidential primaries of the opposition NPP is set to feature former Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Agriculture Minister and MP for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former MP for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong; former Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and former party General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
