NDC’s Tamale Central Parliamentary primaries underway 

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is today, Saturday, September 6, 2025, holding its parliamentary primaries in the Tamale Central constituency.

This has become necessary due to the upcoming by-election following the passing of sitting MP, Alhaji Murtala Muhammed, who died in a helicopter crash along with seven others.

Party officials have confirmed that 12 aspirants are in the NDC primaries for Tamale Central, making the contest one of the most competitive in recent years. The battle for the parliamentary slot is being staged at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, where delegates are expected to vote for a candidate capable of retaining the seat for the party.

According to insiders, the Tamale Central NDC primaries have attracted significant attention because 12 aspirants, including three women, are battling for the parliamentary slot. The outcome is expected to shape the party’s chances in the by-election and signal its readiness for the 2028 general elections.

Security has been heightened in the constituency ahead of the polls. The Northern Regional Police Command, led by DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, has confirmed that more than 400 officers have been deployed to maintain peace and order before, during, and after the exercise.

On Friday, September 5, the NDC’s Northern Regional Directorate of Elections and IT released guidelines for the primaries. Director Dr. Arnold Mashud Abukari said voting will begin at 9:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m. Delegates will be identified through QR-code-enabled tags and must also present valid identification such as a voter ID, Ghana Card, or party membership card.

The exercise will feature four polling stations, each serving specific electoral areas. Station 1 will serve regional and constituency executives, Agric Mohiyebihi, Gumbihini North, and Aboaboo Ward. Station 2 will cater for Moshi-Zongo, Tishigu, Salamba, ADB, Warizihi, and Gumbihini South. Station 3 will handle Dakpemfong, Buglanfong, Sabonjida, and Victory Wards, while Station 4 will serve Changli, Choggu West, Dohinaayili, Zogbeli, and Lamacara.

Dr. Abukari stressed that these measures are designed to ensure that the NDC primaries in Tamale Central are peaceful, transparent, and credible as 12 aspirants battle for the parliamentary slot.
