NPP demands bail for Salomey Bafoh, slams ‘politically sensitive’ cases before Adenta Court

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over what it describes as an emerging pattern of politically sensitive cases involving social media commentators and critics of the government being brought before the Adenta Circuit Court.

The concerns form part of a statement issued by the party on Friday, September 18, 2026, in which it condemned the continued remand of Madam Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a principal nursing officer facing a charge of abetment of the publication of false news.

Madam Bafoh was remanded for an additional two weeks after appearing before the Adenta Circuit Court, where she pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecution alleges that Madam Bafoh assisted Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as “Ghana Jollof”, in disseminating videos through social media. Investigators further allege that Madam Bafoh acted as a liaison for Kodua and recruited others to redistribute the content.

The NPP said it was “further disturbed” by what it described as an emerging pattern of politically sensitive cases involving social media commentators and government critics being brought before the same court, presided over by Her Ladyship Angela Attachie.

“The NPP is further disturbed by what appears to be an emerging pattern of politically sensitive cases involving social-media commentators and critics of the Government being brought before the same Adenta Court, presided over by H/W Angela Attachie,” the party stated.

While acknowledging the constitutional independence of the Judiciary, the NPP said judicial independence must be accompanied by impartiality, fairness and strict adherence to due process.

The party also questioned the territorial jurisdiction of the Adenta Circuit Court, noting that Madam Bafoh resides in Techiman. It said the prosecution must demonstrate what specific act constituting the alleged abetment occurred within the court’s jurisdiction.

The NPP further raised concerns about the involvement of the Chief Justice in the handling of politically sensitive cases, asking:

“Is the Adenta Circuit Court being used by the prosecution, in concert with the Chief Justice, His Lordship Baffoe Bonnie, to advance what the Chief Justice himself has reportedly described as the agenda of the “old man”, a reference to President John Mahama?”

The party did not provide further evidence in the statement to substantiate the allegation, which remains its claim.

The NPP has called on the Chief Justice and Judicial Council to take note of what it describes as growing concerns over the handling of politically sensitive cases before the Adenta Circuit Court.

Madam Bafoh’s case centres on alleged social media activity involving the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account. The NPP said the prosecution had initially alleged that Madam Bafoh was connected to the account and was being investigated over an alleged plot to overthrow the government before presenting the charge of abetment of publication of false news.

The party has urged the government and security agencies to “desist from using the criminal justice system to intimidate or silence citizens who criticize those in power.”

It added that it would continue to defend the constitutional rights and freedoms of every Ghanaian, irrespective of political affiliation.
