NPP Flagbearer race: Bawumia talks on jobs, digital economy, and fair taxes

Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s flagbearer position.
He outlined his ambitious vision to transform Ghana’s economy and create more opportunities for citizens.
Addressing a large crowd of party supporters after filing his papers on Thursday, August 28, Dr. Bawumia described himself as “the most prepared candidate for the NPP, and for President in 2028,” citing his vast experience as a four-time running mate, two-term Vice President, and the NPP’s standard-bearer in the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia pledged bold economic reforms aimed at accelerating growth and easing the financial burden on Ghanaians. “My vision is to expand the Ghanaian economy through bold ideas such as a flat tax system for individuals, corporations, and imports, while creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and accelerate job creation,” he declared.
He further promised to introduce targeted measures to reduce the cost of living and provide stronger support for vulnerable groups. “My vision is to introduce measures that reduce the cost of living for the average Ghanaian and provide stronger support for the vulnerable. I will adopt a constituency-based development and budgeting framework to ensure that local people benefit the most and individual well-being is enhanced,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also emphasized plans for a modern, digitalized economy designed to offer equal opportunities to all, including women, the physically challenged, and people at the grassroots level. He outlined his commitment to a fairer and more accessible credit system, a stronger focus on domestic production, and dedicating 3% of GDP expenditure currently undertaken by the public sector to the private sector to promote local procurement and boost employment.
Calling for unity, Dr. Bawumia urged NPP members to rally behind his candidacy, saying: “Join me on this journey to rebuild our party and reposition this great tradition to deliver for Ghanaians from 2028.”
Meanwhile, the race for the NPP flagbearer slot is intensifying, with Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyapong, and Bryan Acheampong—considered a formidable contender—also filing their nominations earlier.
