NPP in deep crisis with uninspiring leadership – Suhuyini

Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has launched a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He described it as a party in deep crisis with uninspiring leadership.

Speaking in an interview on The KeyPoints on October 4, Mr. Suhuyini said the opposition party’s internal problems are visible to all, citing the lack of credible leadership and the quality of individuals seeking to succeed former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“For the NPP, we can even discuss succession because they have people declaring their intentions to contest. But when you look at the people who are currently leading the NPP today, you ask yourself: how did they become the materials the party has to offer? You listen to some of the regional chairmen speak and you want to go under the table not even because of the grammar, but the logic they express,” Suhuyini argued.

He claimed that the NPP has been reduced to a party whose top officials, from regional to national levels, fail to inspire confidence. He also referenced the situation of one chairman whose family reportedly wrote letters rejecting his involvement in party activities.

According to the Tamale North MP, the party’s inability to reorganize and confront its weaknesses demonstrates a loss of relevance.
“If they do not want to reorganise their party and want to continue deceiving themselves that all is well, we can only wish them well,” he remarked.

Mr. Suhuyini contrasted the NPP’s challenges with what he described as the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) policy-driven focus under President John Mahama. He highlighted several initiatives that, in his view, continue to make a meaningful impact.

Among them, he cited scholarship programs currently being rolled out by the Scholarship Secretariat and the Student Loan Trust Fund to support both local and international students.
“We are focused on making sure students enjoy stress-free access to funding for their education,” he noted.

He also mentioned ongoing entrepreneurship and youth empowerment programmes, including the YouStart initiative and projects by the Youth Enterprise Agency, aimed at creating opportunities for young people.

On the economy, Mr. Suhuyini said the NDC administration has achieved single-digit inflation for the first time in many years, describing it as a sign of effective management. He further noted that falling food inflation indicates that the government’s agricultural interventions are yielding results, leading to bumper harvests and improved food security.

He added that under John Mahama’s leadership, the government remains committed to fighting illegal mining (galamsey) and managing the nation’s natural resources responsibly.
“The focus of President Mahama’s government and the NDC is to deliver results that improve the lives of Ghanaians. At the right time, when the party is convinced it has delivered enough to the admiration of the people, it will decide on who to present as its candidate,” he stressed.
