Otumfuo calls for Seidu Abagre’s recall to Nalerigu

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has recommended the recall of Seidu Abagre to Nalerigu as part of measures aimed at resolving the long-running Bawku chieftaincy dispute.
The recommendation is contained in the Asantehene’s mediation report on the Bawku conflict, which was formally presented to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on Tuesday evening, December 16, 2025.
Otumfuo proposed that Seidu Abagre, who was recently installed by the Mamprusi faction as a rival chief in Bawku, should be withdrawn from the area by the Nayiri, the Overlord of Mamprugu, and reassigned to perform a different traditional role at the Nayiri’s Palace in Nalerigu. The process, according to the report, should be supported by the state to ensure a smooth transition and prevent further tension.
Reading from the report, the Asantehene stated: “The final resolution of the Bawku matters requires that Mr Seidu Abagre be recalled to Nalerigu by the Nayiri to be reassigned to play another traditional role at the Palace of the Nayiri, assisted by the State.”
The report, however, provides an alternative should Mr Abagre decline the reassignment. In that case, Otumfuo said he may remain in Bawku strictly as a private individual, without laying claim to any traditional authority.
“Alternatively, he may choose to stay in Bawku as an ordinary citizen of the community but not to pose as Bawku Naba,” Otumfuo added.
The Asantehene was emphatic that the legal position on the chieftaincy matter remains unchanged. He reaffirmed that decisions of the Supreme Court of Ghana recognise Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the legitimate Bawku Naba.
Otumfuo further explained that the recommendations contained in the report were the outcome of sustained engagements with both factions, noting that concessions were made by all sides in the interest of peace. He stressed that lasting stability in Bawku would depend on respect for the rule of law, traditional authority, and collective commitment to reconciliation.
The Bawku conflict, which has persisted for decades, has resulted in recurrent violence, loss of lives, displacement of residents and destruction of property. Government authorities have consistently emphasised dialogue and mediation as the most viable path to ending the crisis.
The presentation of the Asantehene’s report is expected to guide the next phase of government action as efforts intensify to restore peace and normalcy to the Bawku area.
