Passengers can keep laptops in bags under new Accra airport screening

Passengers using Terminals 2 and 3 at Accra International Airport will no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage during security screening.

This follows the installation of new screening equipment by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

The company announced that it has deployed “new, state-of-the-art security screening equipment” at passenger screening checkpoints to strengthen aviation security while making the screening process more convenient.

According to GACL, “Laptops and other large electronic devices can now remain in your cabin baggage during screening,” eliminating one of the most common steps passengers previously had to complete at security checkpoints.

The company said the upgrade “is designed to enhance aviation security screening while improving the passenger experience,” reflecting efforts to combine stronger security measures with greater passenger convenience.

Beyond allowing laptops to remain in cabin bags, the new system also permits passengers to keep their shoes and belts on during screening unless otherwise required through security profiling.

GACL further announced that liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) may remain inside passengers’ cabin baggage during screening because separate screening of such items may no longer be necessary.

However, it stressed that existing aviation regulations remain unchanged, noting that “security regulations still prohibit LAGs that exceed 100ml in volume per container.”

The installation also includes an Automatic Tray Return System, which is expected to speed up passenger processing by quickly returning trays for the repacking of screened items.

The company said the transition to the new screening system would be introduced gradually alongside existing screening procedures and equipment to ensure a smooth rollout.

As operations begin with the new equipment, GACL appealed for public cooperation, stating: “Ghana Airports Company Limited kindly requests the cooperation of all passengers and stakeholders as we commence operations with the new equipment in the coming days.”

The latest upgrade is expected to improve efficiency at security checkpoints while maintaining aviation security standards at Accra International Airport, particularly for passengers travelling through Terminals 2 and 3.
