Police arrest 132 suspects in drug swoop in Accra

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested 132 suspects during coordinated swoops and motor operations aimed at curbing crime during the Christmas season and beyond.

The arrests followed a series of special operations carried out across several police divisions within the metropolis as part of sustained efforts to clamp down on drug-related and other criminal activities.

Addressing journalists at a briefing on Tuesday, the Head of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service in the Greater Accra Region, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, said the operations also led to the retrieval of various exhibits.

According to her, the items recovered include narcotic substances, suspected stolen property and several motorcycles believed to be connected to criminal activities within the region.

“The police have arrested a total of 132 suspects and retrieved various exhibits, including narcotic substances, suspected stolen items, and motorcycles during a series of special swoop and motor operations conducted in several divisions across the metropolis as part of sustained efforts to combat crime during this Christmas and beyond,” she stated.

Superintendent Obeng explained that all the suspects are currently undergoing screening to determine their level of involvement in criminal activities.

“All suspects arrested during the operations are undergoing screening. Those found culpable will be put before the courts. All persons not linked to criminal activities will be released accordingly,” she added.

During the briefing, Superintendent Obeng also provided an update on a reported theft case that occurred at the recently held Diaspora Summit.

She disclosed that the police have arrested the suspect involved and successfully retrieved the stolen item.

“The suspect was wearing an official summit tag and posing as a legitimate participant. Upon questioning, he failed to provide a credible explanation for his presence at the event and was subsequently arrested and detained at the Ministries Police Station to assist in ongoing investigations,” she said.

She further revealed that police investigations extended to the suspect’s residence at Ashaley-Botwe, where additional items of interest were recovered.

“Our further investigations led us to the residence of the suspect at Ashaley-Botwe. A search was conducted and led us to the recovery of eight ATM cards belonging to different individuals,” Superintendent Obeng noted.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining security before, during and after the festive season, urging residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing timely information to help fight crime across the region.
