Police bust suspected robbery ring linked to attacks on gold dealers in Ashanti, Western regions

Ghana Police Service has arrested five suspected members of an armed robbery gang believed to be responsible for a string of attacks on gold dealers, mining sites and residents across parts of the Ashanti and Western regions.

The arrests followed a series of intelligence-led operations conducted between August and September 4, 2026, aimed at curbing rising criminal activities in mining communities.

Police said the suspects were linked to robberies in Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave, areas known for mining and gold trading activities.

The suspects were identified as Clinton Mawuli, 33, Richmond Mensah, also known as “Master Abey,” Daniel Sarfo, alias “Abedi,” Prince Duker and another suspect whose identity has not yet been disclosed.

In a statement, the Police Service said the operations also led to the recovery of three AK-47 assault rifles, 357 rounds of ammunition, five magazines and two vehicles believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes.

“These arrests form part of ongoing intelligence-led efforts to combat armed robbery and restore public confidence in affected communities,” the statement noted.

Police further disclosed that one suspected gang member, Seidu Salifu, 40, died during the operations.

Investigators said Salifu was not new to law enforcement authorities. He was reportedly standing trial at the Nsuta Circuit Court in connection with an alleged robbery involving gold bullion at Offinso Abofour in July 2025. He was also linked to previous robbery incidents around Sakam near Offinso.

In a related development, the Western Regional Police Command arrested four suspects over the robbery and murder of a gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta on August 21.

The suspects were identified as Christopher Seyiri, also known as “Cross and Die,” Bashiru Ibrahim, Thomas Odoom, alias “Wale,” and Isaac Quayeson, known as “Last Burial.”

Police said Quayeson was arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region after investigators tracked his movements.

A search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of two locally manufactured pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses.

The Police Service described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in efforts to tackle armed robbery and violent crime in mining communities, where attacks on gold dealers have become a growing concern.

“To strengthen security and prevent further attacks, special police teams have been deployed to the affected communities,” the statement said.

According to the Service, the deployment is expected to provide reassurance to residents, traders and business owners while investigations continue.

Police have also urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing information that could assist ongoing investigations.
