A 33-year-old pregnant woman, identified as Yaa Karim, has died after two teenagers allegedly shot her twice after mistaking her for a deer while she was collecting firewood at Huniso, near Bogoso, in the Western Region.
The incident occurred last Thursday morning when Karim reportedly went into a farmland area to gather firewood during time off from her work as a labourer at Ghana Rubber Plantation Limited.
The two suspects, whose ages are reported to be around 18 and younger, are currently in police custody in Tarkwa as investigations into the incident continue.
According to reports, the teenagers claimed they noticed movement in the bush and assumed it was a deer. They allegedly fired at the target without confirming what it was, only to discover later that they had shot a woman.
The deceased’s sister, Lydia Abanga, told Connect 97.1 FM in Takoradi that Karim may have been moving the collected firewood towards the roadside when the shooting occurred.
“I think she was trying to draw the wood to the roadside when the kids shot her,” Abanga said.
She expressed concern about the young ages of the suspects, noting that one was about 18 years old while the other was even younger.
Abanga further disclosed that the suspects allegedly told the family they fired a second shot after the first failed to bring Karim down.
“They shot her twice,” she said.
According to her, the teenagers subsequently reported themselves to the police.
Karim, who was six months pregnant at the time of her death, leaves behind four children. Her death has plunged the family into grief, with relatives calling for justice over the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police in Tarkwa have confirmed that investigations are ongoing. The suspects are expected to be arraigned before a court after the necessary procedures have been completed.
