PTA reinstatement to Free SHS status positive – Dr. Apaak

Deputy Education Minister-Designate, Dr. Clement Apaak has hailed the reinstatement of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to their Free Senior High School (SHS) status as a positive development.

According to Dr. Apaak, “the reinstatement of the parent-teacher situations to free senior high school status is positive”.

Dr. Apaak made this statement during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

The restoration of PTAs to their former role is seen as a significant shift in the government’s approach to education management. Prior to the introduction of the Free SHS policy, PTAs played a crucial role in supporting schools through infrastructure development, resource mobilization, and advocacy.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has consistently emphasized the importance of community participation in education delivery. According to the GES, “the involvement of parents and the community in the management of schools is critical to the success of the education system.”

Dr. Apaak’s assertion that the reinstatement of PTAs to their Free SHS status is positive suggests that the government is committed to harnessing the potential of PTAs in improving education outcomes.

The decision is expected to complement the government’s efforts to address the challenges facing the Free SHS policy, including infrastructure deficits, resource constraints, and quality assurance concerns.
