Supreme Court stands as the ultimate sentinel of our collective destiny – Linda Ocloo

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Ocloo has described the Supreme Court as the ultimate sentinel of Ghana’s collective destiny.

The Regional Minister made the remarks in a solidarity message delivered at the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ghana, held under the theme, “The Supreme Court in the Life of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana – Taking Stock and Looking Forward.”

Hon. Ocloo said the anniversary offered the country an opportunity to reflect on the Supreme Court’s role as the apex institution responsible for interpreting the Constitution and protecting the principles that underpin Ghana’s democratic governance.

She explained that the Court’s significance goes beyond its long history, emphasizing its position as a key institution that safeguards the nation’s constitutional order.

“As we mark the sesquicentennial of the Supreme Court of Ghana, a formidable milestone reflecting a history stretching far beyond our current Republic, we bear witness to an apex institution that has stood as the ultimate sentinel of our collective destiny,” she stated.

According to the Minister, the Supreme Court has remained a stabilizing force in Ghana’s governance system, especially during periods of political transitions and constitutional changes.

She noted that the Court’s responsibility in upholding the rule of law has helped strengthen confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions and ensured that constitutional principles remain protected.

“For a century and a half, through the shifting sands of political transitions and constitutional upheavals, this Court has remained the ultimate anchor of the rule of law,” Hon. Ocloo said.

She added that the Judiciary remains an essential pillar of democracy, stressing the need for continuous support to enable it to execute its mandate independently and effectively.

Hon. Ocloo also highlighted the importance of the Supreme Court’s role in preserving the balance between power and principle, noting that the strength of any democracy depends on institutions that operate within the framework of the law.

She said Greater Accra, as the administrative, political and constitutional capital of Ghana, takes pride in hosting the nation’s highest court and remains committed to supporting an environment that promotes justice and fairness.

“Here, within the Greater Accra Region, the beating heart of our republic, we do not merely host the seat of justice; we shelter the very conscience of Ghana,” she remarked.

The Regional Minister congratulated the Chief Justice, Justices of the Supreme Court, past and present, and all members of the Judicial Service for their dedication to strengthening Ghana’s constitutional democracy.

She expressed hope that the next chapter of the Supreme Court would be marked by judicial courage, institutional innovation and unwavering commitment to the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

The Supreme Court of Ghana is commemorating its 150th anniversary with a series of activities to reflect on its historical journey, constitutional mandate and contribution to justice delivery and democratic governance. The anniversary celebration, held under the theme “The Supreme Court in the Life of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana – Taking Stock and Looking Forward,” brings together stakeholders from the Judiciary, government, legal profession and other sectors to assess the institution’s achievements and future direction.
