Three dead, 20 injured in Accra New Town building collapse – Muntaka

Three people have died and 20 others are receiving treatment after a building collapsed at Accra New Town Experimental School, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak confirmed.
The Minister provided the updated figures during a media briefing after the first phase of search and rescue operations was completed at the site. He said the numbers were carefully verified through collaboration between the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the National Ambulance Service.
“We have cross-checked and double-checked from all the agencies involved to ensure accuracy,” the Minister stated, highlighting the difficulty in establishing the precise number of people present in the building when it collapsed.
Out of a total of 23 victims, three — one male and two females — tragically lost their lives. “The identities of the deceased are yet to be officially released,” he added.
The remaining 20 survivors are being treated at various medical facilities, including the Police Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, Maamobi General Hospital, and a private health facility.
Further details show that 15 of those affected are female, while eight are male. Among the survivors are seven minors. “None of the deceased were minors,” the Minister clarified.
Commending emergency responders, he said, “Their swift and coordinated response was commendable. They worked through the night to rescue victims and account for those affected.”
Authorities have indicated that investigations into the cause of the building collapse are ongoing. Focus is now shifting toward supporting the survivors and the families of those who lost their lives.
The incident has raised renewed concerns over building safety standards in parts of Accra, prompting calls for stricter monitoring and adherence to construction regulations to prevent future tragedies.
