United Party: We aim to be the alternative to the duopoly — Yaw Buaben  

Former Member of Parliament for the Adentan Constituency and now General Secretary of the United Party (UP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has stated that the new political party seeks to provide an alternative to Ghana’s long-standing political duopoly.

According to Asamoa, the current duopoly has entrenched a winner-takes-all system, which continues to exclude citizens from meaningful participation in public life. He warned that without drastic intervention, the country could face severe consequences.

“We aim to be the alternative, the alternative to the duopoly which is driving winner-takes-all and creating exclusion in public life,” Asamoa said during the launch of the United Party.

He emphasized that the party will prioritise the nation above individual interests and ensure that Ghana’s name is elevated in all decisions.

“The UP is here to unite Ghana. The motto of UP, as you’ve heard already, is Ghana First. Everything we do as a nation must focus on lifting the name of the country high and above conflicting individual interests,” he said.

Asamoa further outlined the party’s inclusive vision for Ghana. “The UP wants a Ghana that includes everybody regardless of tribe, gender, status, or political standing. The UP will offer all of us a government of national unity. United Party is about the transformation of our political system, transformation in leadership, transformational policies and transformation of our national mindset from ‘cannot do’ to ‘can do.’”

The United Party was officially launched by Alan Kyerematen on Thursday, October 16, 2025, transitioning from the Movement for Change.

Kyerematen highlighted that the party is committed to building a united, peaceful, secure, and prosperous Ghana. He underscored that UP will provide equal opportunities for all Ghanaians to realize their full potential, regardless of social, economic, or political background.

The United Party positions itself as a centrist and inclusive alternative aimed at breaking the entrenched dominance of the NPP and NDC, while fostering unity, good governance, and sustainable development across the country.
