Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to run for NPP General Secretary

Former Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially declared her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.

In a Facebook post marking her birthday on Monday, October 20, 2025, the former Ablekuma West MP described her decision as a call to restore unity, rebuild grassroots confidence, and refocus the party’s mission ahead of its next major political test.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said her entry into the race represents a “rescue mission” aimed at reorganising the NPP after what she described as a bruising internal and national experience. She urged party members to rally together, adding that internal renewal was key to regaining public trust.

“Patriots, I come to you in all humility to ask that you join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary,” she declared, stressing her commitment to rebuild the NPP “from the polling stations to the national level.”

She acknowledged that the party had faced major setbacks in recent years, but maintained that its spirit of resilience would lead to a revival. “We lie not in a good place, but as our great tradition has shown, we will thrive again,” she said, referencing the NPP’s founding in Saltpond.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful described the party’s current struggles as a moment of self-reflection rather than collapse, saying it was a necessary stage for reorganisation and growth.

She pledged to strengthen the NPP’s grassroots structures and promote internal cohesion. “We will restore confidence in our party and unity among ourselves,” she assured, emphasising that internal solidarity was crucial for reclaiming national confidence.

Looking ahead to the 2028 polls, she said the NPP must reposition itself as a credible alternative capable of delivering progress and rekindling public hope. “Ghanaians are yearning for change,” she noted, “and it is our duty to represent that change with purpose and renewed belief.”
