Watch Now: Late President Atta-Mills’ wreath-laying ceremony

A wreath-laying ceremony is currently underway at the Asomdwee Park in Accra in honour of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who died while serving as Ghana’s president in July 2012.
The solemn event is being attended by President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, other dignitaries, government officials, political party representatives, traditional leaders, clergy, family members, and members of the general public.
The ceremony is taking place at the late president’s final resting place, Asomdwee Park, which has become a symbol of peace and national unity over the past decade. Attendees are laying floral tributes and offering prayers in remembrance of his leadership and personal values of humility, peace, and patriotism.
This year’s commemoration marks yet another moment of national reflection, with brief speeches celebrating the legacy of the man fondly remembered as “Asomdwehene” — King of Peace.
Professor John Evans Atta Mills served as Ghana’s president from January 2009 until his sudden death on July 24, 2012, making him the first sitting president in Ghana’s history to die in office. A renowned law professor and tax expert, he was also Vice President from 1997 to 2001 under the late President Jerry John Rawlings.
President Mills, who led the country on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was known for his soft-spoken nature, commitment to good governance, and efforts to strengthen democracy. His presidency focused on education, economic stability, and national cohesion.
