You have been impressive – Akufo-Addo commends NPP Presidential Election Committee

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Election Committee for what he described as an impressive, transparent process.
In a post on X on January 9, 2026, the former flag bearer said the committee briefed him on preparations toward the party’s presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31.
“The Presidential Election Committee of the New Patriotic Party called on me today to present a thorough report of activities undertaken to discharge the assignment,” Akufo-Addo wrote.
He said the work done so far had met high standards and aligned with core democratic principles within the party. “The Committee’s work, thus far, has been nothing short of impressive,” he stated.
According to the former president, the committee has achieved key milestones by insisting on openness and strict internal safeguards.
He noted that “key milestones achieved on the principles of zero-tolerance for opacity have ensured transparency, and guarded religiously, the sanctity of the process.”
The Presidential Election Committee of the party is chaired by former MP for Bekwai, Joseph Osei Wusu who has been largely praised for his work.
The NPP is preparing to elect a presidential candidate from a field of five aspirants ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The contenders are former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Dr Bryan Acheampong, and former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
Akufo-Addo has deliberately stayed out of the contest, maintaining neutrality as a former president and former flag bearer of the party. Party sources say this posture is intended to allow a fair contest and avoid perceptions of influence.
Late last year, however, he invited all five aspirants to his private residence for what insiders described as a cordial interaction focused on party unity and discipline.
The meeting was meant to remind all aspirants that the bigger goal is victory for the NPP.
The Presidential Election Committee has since rolled out timelines, vetting procedures, and internal guidelines aimed at ensuring a credible primary.
With less than a month to the primary, the party leadership says it expects a competitive but orderly process.
Akufo-Addo’s public endorsement of the committee’s work is seen by many within the NPP as a confidence boost for both the organisers and party faithful as preparations intensify.
