Youth unemployment: Opportunities and challenges under 24-hour economy

In Ghana, youth unemployment remains a pressing challenge, with a significant proportion of the younger population struggling to find meaningful work. John Dramani Mahama recognises that addressing this issue is not just a matter of economic necessity; it is essential for the social and political stability of the nation.
His vision for a 24-hour economy is intricately linked to creating sustainable job opportunities for the youth, ensuring that they are not just passive recipients of economic policies but active participants in the nation’s growth. One of the core components of Mahama’s strategy involves leveraging Ghana’s rich natural resources and expanding sectors such as agriculture, technology, and tourism.
By investing in these areas, Mahama aims to generate a plethora of job opportunities that align with the skills and aspirations of young Ghanaians. For instance, initiatives aimed at promoting agribusiness can empower youth to become entrepreneurs, transforming the agricultural landscape while simultaneously tackling food security issues. However, challenges abound. The gap between the skills possessed by many young people and those demanded by the job market remains a significant hurdle. Mahama emphasises the importance of education and vocational training, advocating for curricula that are more aligned with the needs of modern industries.
This approach not only prepares the youth for available jobs, but also fosters a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, inspiring young Ghanaians to create their own opportunities rather than merely seeking employment. Additionally, Mahama’s vision includes fostering a supportive environment for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are vital for job creation. By providing access to financing, mentorship, and resources, Mahama’s next government will empower young entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses, thus contributing to a vibrant economy that operates around the clock.
While the challenge of youth unemployment in Ghana is significant, Mahama’s vision presents a roadmap for not only addressing this issue, but also revitalising the economy as a whole.
By focusing on creating a 24-hour economy that prioritises job creation, skill development, and entrepreneurship, Ghana can harness the potential of its youth, transforming them into the driving force behind the nation’s progress.
