Zanetor nominated to replace late Murtala Mohammed as Environment Minister-designate

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Korle Klottey Member of Parliament, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawling, as Minister-designate for the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, nearly a year after the death of the sector minister, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the military helicopter crash of August 6, 2025.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ nomination, announced on Friday, August 7, fills the vacancy created by the tragic crash, which claimed the lives of Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and several other government officials.

The nomination was contained in a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson,Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who said President Mahama had submitted her name to Parliament through the Speaker for prior approval in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution..

The latest ministerial changes also saw Mahama Ayariga nominated as Minister-designate for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei moved to the **Ministry of Defence, and Ahmed Ibrahim reassigned to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

If approved by Parliament, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, a medical doctor and legislator, will assume responsibility for the Ministry overseeing environmental protection, science, technology and innovation.

Her appointment comes as the government continues efforts to strengthen environmental governance, including measures to combat plastic pollution, advance climate resilience and promote sustainable development

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings has represented the Korle Klottey Constituency since 2017 and is the daughter of Ghana’s late former President Jerry John Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
