Naana Jane, Bawumia hail UDS historic world championship victory

Ghana’s political leaders have heaped praise on the University for Development Studies (UDS) after the team’s historic triumph at the 2025 World University Football Championship in China.
UDS stunned defending champions Paulista University with a 2-1 win after extra time, clinching the title thanks to a dramatic last-minute goal from a corner kick.
The victory crowns their rise from continental success at the FASU Games in Lagos last year to global champions in Dalian.
Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman commended the players for their resilience and determination.
“After a spirited journey, players from Ghana’s University for Development Studies (UDS) have been crowned Champions of the University World Cup in China,” she stated on X.
“Your determination, teamwork, and resilience have lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football. This victory is a triumph for UDS and the entire nation.”
She further noted that the achievement would inspire the next generation.
“Know that you have written your names in history and inspired young people across Ghana and beyond. Congratulations,” she added.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also described the win as a milestone for both Ghana and Africa.
“I congratulate the University for Development Studies (UDS) for winning the 2025 World University Football Championship, a truly historic feat that has brought pride to Ghana and Africa,” he said.
The win also highlights the work of Coach Ibrahim Tanko, who guided UDS with tactical discipline and belief.
Supporters were quick to praise his leadership, noting his transformation of the team.
“From RTU to UDS and now lifting the FISU University World Cup,” one fan remarked, crediting Tanko’s influence.
With their world title, UDS have etched their name into university football history, giving Ghana a moment of pride and celebration on the global stage.
