School sports key to talent development and national unity – Dr. Apaak

The 35th Edition of the Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival has officially opened in the Greater Accra Region, bringing together young athletes from Ghana’s 16 regions for a national celebration of sporting talent, discipline and unity.

Opening the festival, the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, described school sports as an important avenue for identifying young talent while promoting physical education and national cohesion.

“For thirty-five remarkable years, this festival has remained one of the nation’s most important platforms for discovering sporting talent, promoting physical education, fostering discipline, and strengthening national cohesion among our young people.”

Held under the theme, “35 Years of Sporting Excellence: Shaping Disciplined Leaders, Inspiring National Unity and Building Future Champions,” the festival seeks to use sports to promote character development and strengthen bonds among young people from across the country.

Dr. Apaak said the value of school sports extends beyond competition, stressing its contribution to education and the development of responsible citizens.

“Sports have always been far more than competition. They are a powerful tool for education, character formation and national development.”

The Builsa South lawmaker said participation in sports helps children develop discipline, teamwork, resilience and leadership, among other qualities.

“Through sports, our children learn discipline, respect, perseverance, teamwork, resilience, leadership and fair play. These are qualities that prepare them not only to become successful athletes, but responsible citizens and future leaders of our country.”

The Deputy Minister also commended teachers, coaches, team managers, officials, volunteers and other stakeholders for their commitment to nurturing young sporting talents.

He expressed appreciation to sponsors and development partners for their continued investment in youth development through education and sports.

Dr. Apaak further expressed confidence that the festival could produce athletes capable of representing Ghana at major international competitions, noting that many of the country’s sporting legends began their journeys on school playing fields.

He officially declared the 35th edition open and wished all participants a successful, enjoyable and injury-free competition.
