Dr. Apaak urges student-athletes to prioritize discipline

The Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has urged young athletes taking part in the 35th Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival to prioritize discipline, integrity and sportsmanship over medals and trophies.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the festival in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Apaak said the lessons and values gained through sports could shape the participants’ character and influence them long after the competition.

“You are not merely representing your schools or your regions. You are ambassadors of discipline, integrity and excellence.”

He urged the young athletes to remember that their conduct, respect for opponents and adherence to the rules were just as important as their performance on the field.

“As you compete, remember that true victory is not measured only by medals and trophies, but by your character, your respect for your opponents, your obedience to the rules, and your commitment to fair play.”

Dr. Apaak also encouraged participants to handle both victory and defeat with maturity and uphold the reputation of their schools and regions.

The Deputy Minister said the annual festival offers more than a platform for sporting competition, providing an opportunity for young people from Ghana’s 16 regions to build friendships, appreciate the country’s diversity and strengthen national unity.

The 35th edition is being held under the theme, “35 Years of Sporting Excellence: Shaping Disciplined Leaders, Inspiring National Unity and Building Future Champions.”

Dr. Clement Apaak stressed that the relationships and experiences gained during the festival could have a lasting impact on the participants.

“The friendships you build here will outlive this competition. The lessons you learn during these few days will remain with you throughout your lives.”

He encouraged the athletes to approach the competition in the spirit of friendship, fair play and healthy competition while striving for excellence.
