Ghana set to introduce free visa policy for all African

Ghana will introduce a free-visa policy for all African citizens starting May 25, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.
The initiative, which coincides with the commemoration of Africa Day, will allow travellers from across the continent to apply for e-visas online at no cost. The move is expected to remove financial barriers to travel while promoting stronger regional integration.
President Mahama made the announcement during bilateral talks with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the sidelines of an African Union summit, where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation among African nations.
“I’m also pleased to announce that effective 25th May 2026, when we commemorate Africa Day, Ghana will commence a free visa regime for all Africans. Africans travelling to Ghana will receive their e-visas online, free of charge. But between Ghana and Zimbabwe, in Laos, we have a visa-free environment already,” he said.
“You can travel to each other’s countries without needing a visa. You just hop onto the plane and arrive in each other’s country,” he added.
Despite the introduction of the free visa regime, the government has assured that security protocols will remain intact. President Mahama indicated that all travellers will still undergo proper screening procedures before being granted entry into the country.
The policy places Ghana among a select group of African countries that have adopted visa-free or simplified entry systems for citizens across the continent. Countries such as Rwanda, Seychelles, and The Gambia have implemented similar measures to encourage mobility and economic cooperation.
On the announcement , many say the initiative is likely to boost tourism by making Ghana more accessible to African travellers, while also enhancing trade and investment opportunities. Increased movement of people is also expected to strengthen cultural exchange and deepen ties between nations.
The decision reflects Ghana’s broader commitment to Pan-Africanism and aligns with ongoing efforts by the African Union to promote the free movement of people, goods, and services across the continent.
With this policy, Ghana aims to position itself as a key gateway for African collaboration, supporting economic growth and fostering unity among member states.
