Ibrahim Mahama assault: Head of Black Maria removed

DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil has been removed as head of the IGP’s Special Operations Team amid investigations into an alleged assault involving his unit.

The leadership change follows claims by renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama that he was assaulted by members of the Special Operations Team, popularly known as the Black Maria.

A formal handing-over ceremony took place on April 7, 2026, at the National Police Training School in Accra to implement the transition in command.

During the event, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil transferred authority to Superintendent Augustine Dawson Amoah, who now leads the unit with the support of three senior officers tasked with maintaining operational stability.

In his remarks at the ceremony, DSP Jalil urged officers to fully support the new leadership to ensure continuity in the team’s mandate and adherence to directives from the Police Administration.

Superintendent Augustine Dawson Amoah, upon assuming command, called for unity within the ranks and stressed the importance of discipline and professionalism as the team navigates the transition period.

The development comes as investigations continue into allegations that members of the Special Operations Team assaulted Ibrahim Mahama.

The artist has claimed that DSP Jalil was present during the incident and failed to intervene.

The Special Operations Team, established to handle high-risk assignments, has in recent years gained public attention under the nickname Black Maria due to its operational style and visibility.

The reshuffle of leadership is part of efforts to ensure transparency and accountability while the probe is ongoing.

Authorities have not yet disclosed timelines for the conclusion of the investigation but have assured of due process to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
